Leadership training trends

G’day my fellow leaders in Australia,

In my 20 years in leadership development, I’ve seen various trends emerge and evolve over time.

I would like to share with you some of the most enduring leadership development trends we encounter

First and foremost, the trend of personalised leadership development has gained significant momentum in recent years. Leaders are no longer satisfied with generic leadership development programs. Instead, they are seeking tailored solutions that cater to their specific needs and objectives: Gallup Strengths Assessments, diagnostic tools like LSI, DISC, the good old Myers Briggs, VIA Values, 360s et al. Organisations are now investing in bespoke coaching and development programs to enhance leadership skills and improve overall team performance.

Secondly, the importance of emotional intelligence has never waned. As leaders, we must not only possess technical skills but also be adept at understanding and managing emotions. Emotional intelligence is now recognized as a critical component of effective leadership. Goldman’s original pillars remain critical to mastery: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management. Leaders who can navigate and leverage emotions effectively can create a positive work environment, foster better relationships with employees, and drive business success. With AI close to making many of us redundant, it’s imperative we leverage the human factors to keep ourselves relevant, appreciated, and valuable.

Thirdly, diversity and inclusion have become more important than ever. Leaders are realizing the importance of building diverse teams that can bring different perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. This trend has seen a surge in the recruitment of individuals from diverse backgrounds, communities, cultures, even industries. Leaders are also investing in training programs that help them better understand and manage diversity within their teams.

Fourthly, the trend of continuous learning and development isn’t going anywhere. In the fast-paced business environment, leaders must be adaptable and willing to learn new skills to remain relevant. As such, leaders are increasingly seeking out development opportunities that allow them to expand their knowledge and skills. Organisations are now providing access to a wide range of resources, including online learning platforms and mentoring programs, to support continuous learning and development. Remember Kaizen, CANI, Six Sigma, dare I say Agile? All filling the need for CPD, a continuous exploration of new ways of working and leading, and a desire for personal growth and value

Finally, the trend of ethical leadership marches on. With increasing scrutiny on corporate behavior, leaders must not only focus on driving business results but also demonstrate a commitment to ethical conduct. Organisations are investing in training programs to promote ethical leadership, and help leaders make ethical decisions that align with the values and mission of their organisations and the communities they serve. Within this is a renewed and welcome focus on health and well-being. Spurred by the WFH movement and in the COVID wake, organisations are realising that taking care of profits starts with taking care of people.

In conclusion, as leaders, it is essential that we stay informed and adapt to these changes to remain effective in our roles. Let us embrace these trends and continue to develop ourselves as leaders, for the betterment of our teams and our organisations

Remember, leadership is not a position or a title, it is action, example, and connection
